Celebrate Recovery

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3-10

What is Celebrate Recovery (CR)?

CR was designed as a program to help those struggling with hurts, habits and hang-ups by showing them the loving power of Jesus Christ through a recovery process.

  • CR is based on God's Word, the Bible. When Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount, he began by stating "Eight Ways to Be Happy." Today we call them the Beatitudes. When you fully understand what Jesus is saying, you'll realize that these eight principles are God's road to recovery, wholeness, growth, and spiritual maturity.
  • CR is forward-looking. Rather than wallowing in the past, or dredging up and rehearsing painful memories over and over, Celebrate Recovery focuses on the future.
  • CR emphasizes personal responsibility. Instead of playing the "accuse and excuse" game of victimization, this program helps people face up to their own poor choices and deal with what they can do something about. When we stop wasting time fixing the blame, we have more energy to fix the problem.
  • CR emphasized spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ. The 3rd principle calls for people to make a total surrender of their lives to Christ. Lasting recovery cannot happen without this step. Everybody needs Jesus.
  • CR utilizes the biblical truth that we need each other in order to grow spiritually and emotionally. It is built around small group interaction and the fellowship of a caring community. Celebrate Recovery is built on the New Testament principle that we don't get well by ourselves. We need each other. Fellowship and accountability are two important components of spiritual growth.
  • CR addresses all types of habits, hurts and hang-ups. Some recovery programs deal only with alcohol or drugs or another single problem. But Celebrate Recovery is a "large umbrella" program under which a limitless number of issues can be dealt with.
  • CR produces lay ministers! Because Celebrate Recovery is biblical and church-based, it produces a continuous stream of people moving into ministry after they've found recovery in Christ.

Is Celebrate Recovery for me?

Most people think of recovery as relating only to substance abuse and sobriety. But there is no shortage of unhealthy behaviors that we use to get ahead or simply to get by. Are you faced with difficult issues—over-commitment, over-spending, anger, complacency, defensiveness, resentment? Maybe you are only able to feel good about yourself when you receive approval from others? We all have hurts, habits, and hang-ups because we live in a world that is full of problems. Celebrate Recovery offers a better way to deal with the difficult issues of life that will help you grow through them instead of being stuck in them.

Some coping techniques are openly considered negative in our culture when taken to excess: alcohol, sex, drugs. Other unhealthy choices are considered relatively acceptable: over-eating, working too much, excessive TV viewing, over-commitment, excessive spending. Sometimes our unhealthy compulsions can be tricky to uncover. It’s worth taking the time to examine how you react when you’re hurting or in a stressful situation, and why you react in this way. Just because a coping technique is familiar doesn’t mean that it’s healthy!
